A Traveler is Resolute and Independent Tenets of Wordsworth in Resolution and Independence Romanticism officially began in 1798, when William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge anonymously published Lyrical Ballads. This work marked the official beginning of a literary period which had already begun many years before 1798. A work is defined to be of a certain period by its characteristics, therefore to be considered a Romantic work, the work must contain aspects which are termed "Romantic." A few typical "Romantic" aspects are: love of the past; sympathy to the child's mind; faith in the inner goodness of man; aspects of nature having religious, mystic, and symbolic significance; and reconciliation of contrasting ideas to make a point. Wordsworth flourished in these ideas in a poem called Independence and Resolution. In this poem Wordsworth shows the reader what he thinks his life is like and what he wants it to be like. In its essence, Resolution and Independence is an open book to what Wordsworth feels his life is like. It is about the past, present, and future Wordsworth. Wordsworth feels that his life is like a "traveler" on the moors (15). He feels that in the past he has always been like a small "boy," who never "heard" or "saw" the beauties of nature (18). As a child, Wordsworth never understood life, because he never looked to nature for inspiration or guidance. Presently, Wordsworth feels he that he is "a happy Child of earth," because he walks "far from the world. . . far from all care" (31, 33). He begins a search to find a way to live in harmony with himself, God, and nature. During his search, he finds an old man, the leech-gatherer, who is one with himself, God, and nature. Upon seeing this man, Wordsworth is immediately amazed by the mien of this old man. Wordsworth admires this man's insight on life, that Wordsworth decides that he wants to become the same way. Thus, in Wordsworth's search for his place in eternity in nature, he finds an example that he wants to duplicate. Resolution and Independence includes many tenets of Romanticism including a love of the past. Wordsworth loves the storm of the previous night and the "rain-drops" on the moors that it leaves behind (10). Wordsworth loves the old man, because the old man has so much knowledge from his past experiences. The poet enjoys reminiscing on past experiences: I was a Traveler then upon the moor I saw the hare that raced about with joy; I heard the woods and distant waters roar; Or heard them not, as happy as a boy; The pleasant season did my heart employ; My old remembrances went from me wholly; And all the ways of men, so vain and melancholy A Second major Romantic characteristic is "wind" (1). Wind is symbolic of the vitality of the poetic spirit. When wind is mentioned, the reader can assume that the next bit of the work is going to be lively, because the author feels his poetic spirit has been rejuvenated. Rain, or water, is another Romantic attribute mentioned: "the rain came in heavy floods" (2). Rain is symbolic of life, because water is the source and maintainer of all living things. Rain is also symbolic of poetic inspiration. The rain of the past evening's storm inspires Wordsworth to write this poem. The reminders observed in nature and memories stirred in his mind urge him to continue on. The reminders in nature include the"rain-drops" and the "mist" that the hare kicks up (10,13). In Resolution and Independence, the ponds represent the poetic memory, or the poem itself. Wordsworth admires the old man, because he interacts with other poets memories, or poems. The act of the old man wading through Wordsworth's pond is symbolic the old man "reading a book," or one of Wordsworth's works (81). The old man inspires Wordsworth by stirring the water in Wordsworth's pond. This action allows Wordsworth's past inspirations to resurface. Another Romantic tenet is the reconciliation of differences to make a point. Wordsworth wanted to stress his "dejection" by writing: And fears and fancies thick upon me came; Dim sadness-blind thought, I knew not, nor could name. (25, 27-9) Thought makes a Romantic poet happy (which is another tenet of Romanticism), and a blind man can not distinguish between any two levels of dimness. Hence, the usage of these contrasting points helps convince the reader that Wordsworth is ill at ease. His point is made and well understood, thus making this a good literary technique. College Fraternities College fraternities have always struck me as being an organization of guys who spend their time drinking beer and having their "social gatherings" (parties). Just moving to Austin recently (which is by no doubt a "college city") has made me want to know more about the sole purpose of these fraternities. For these reasons I chose to select this culture for my essay. The definition of a fraternity is defined as " chiefly social organization of male college students, usually designated by Greek letters". (Morris 1982:523) This definition is not true to all where most fraternity members are seen as drunks who accomplish nothing scholastically or socially . Unfortunately, the definition and portrayal of the people fails to mention the fact that membership in a fraternity is a life-long experience that helps its members develop social, organizational, and study skills, and also teaches true, everlasting friendship. As a matter of fact most of our presidents were members of a Greek organization. "The first fraternity was founded for literary and social purposes at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia on December 5th 1776." (Klepper 1937:24) Throughout the nineteenth century many new fraternities were founded, but none of these were permanent. By the end of the nineteenth century there were over thirty general fraternities in the country. Today's fraternities still have the characteristics of past fraternities. These characteristics include "a ritual, oaths of fidelity, a grip, a motto, a badge , friendship and comradeship (Klepper 1937:56) . During membership one must learn leadership skills. Crooks’ isolation in ‘Of Mice and Men’ Essay

1. The person who influenced Crooks to be isolated is his dad. When Crooks was a kid, he did play with some white kids. However, although those white kids were pretty nice, Crooks’ dad didn’t allow him to do, as Crooks said, â€Å"My ol’ man didn’t like that†. Thus, when Crooks was growing up, he was increasingly aware of that there exist a boundary between black people and white people that is hard to go across. As he found that â€Å"there wasn’t another colored family for miles around and now there ain’t a colored man on this ranch†, Crooks felt himself isolated because there were no black people whom he could communicate with, as he stated in the story, â€Å"If I say something, why it’s just a nigger sayin’ it.† Furthermore, the white workers on the ranch also played a major role of influencing Crooks to be isolated. They discriminated him, thought Crooks † stink† and didn’t allow Crooks to play cards together with them. This would enhance Crooks’ feeling of isolation. Therefore, both of Crooks’ dad and the white people on the ranch influenced Crooks to feel isolated and lived alone in a shed. 2. If I were Crooks, I would feel the same way as Crooks did: lonely, frustrated and helpless, just like a single man walking on the boundless desert. Whenever I am unhappy or sad, nobody talks to me and give me comforts. Crooks said, † A guy needs somebody-to be near him†¦ A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody.† That’s true. This unhealthy mental state will make me feel more and more miserable; and also think that life is hopeless. That’s true. If human beings avoid communications with each other, then the life becomes boring and meaningless. Being lonely or isolated is not the nature of a person. Why does George feel bad after killing Lennie? That’s because George lost a friend whom he was used to for a long time and a sudden feeling of lonely came to his heart. So, being lonely and isolated will affect not only my emotions but also my life in a negative way. 3. When I was in elementary school, there was one student in our class who lost three fingers in a car accident at six. However, such an unlucky boy didn’t get any support from us. Instead, nobody wanted to do homework with him because he couldn’t write words quickly; nobody liked to play sports with him because he couldn’t even hold a ball in his hands; nobody would like to make friends with him because they felt embarrassed of staying with a handicapped person. Even one day he fell onto the group, nobody came to give him a hand. He never told us his name. I could notice that he felt isolated and rejected from the entire class. He usually just sat silently at one corner of the classroom in the back. After one year, he quit school and no one cared about that. While reading this chapter, Crooks’ life on the ranch reminds me of the real-life situation happened on that boy who felt lonely and isolated.

The National Museum of American History – Essay Free Online Research Papers The National Museum of American History Essay It was a nice sunny morning when I and a friend have decided to take a trip to one of greatest museums of all times The National Museum of American History. It was a great adventure to discover something new for ourselves and fill up our knowledge with tons of new information. The museums ambitious mission is to chronicle American history, science, industry and culture through artifacts. It is the sixth Smithsonian building on the National Mall. To this end, the museum has an enormous collection of more than 3 million objects (Washington Post). American History museum is very large and it would definitely take more than a day to explore it. On the first floor the museum maintains many of the exhibitions from its original manifestation as the National Museum of History and Technology. The exhibits focus primarily on science and transportation and connections between technology and daily life in general. After looking around for a few minutes we immediately headed to the â€Å"Communities in a Changing nation† section. The title below said â€Å"The promise of 19th century America†. This was a good topic to start with. As I walked through this part I’ve noticed a number of great inventions such as a milling machine (Henry Hayden) and a gating gun. A lot of attention went to the ‘Rise of the Labor Unions† exhibit as we moved further. It represented the rise of industrialization during the second half of the nineteenth century where labor shifted from skilled artisans to unskilled workers who operated machines. I learned that this condition put a severe limitation on the independence and economic viability of the worker and that no laws yet existed at that time protecting workers. This lack of legislation allowed employers to overwork and underpay the laborers, who were desperate for some employment. These factors initiated the rise of labor unions. When I passed the â€Å"Peddling Life Jewish immigrant’s movement† corner, my eyes stopped on â€Å"African American in slavery and Freedom† exhibition. Since this is a topic currently discussed in our history class, I’ve realized I need to give it more attention and look at every detail. I’ve closely studied slave’s lifestyle and their treatment. Nearby there was an imitation of a Charleston Market which had all kinds of products including: peaches, potatoes, peas, carrots, fish, onion and many more different foods. Later in this section I discovered the â€Å"Cruel and Unusual Pun ishment† of slaves and â€Å"Plantation Slavery†. Later we headed downstairs to the second floor for the intriguing opportunity of viewing the huge flag. This is the very flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that eventually became the U.S. national anthem in 1931Maintenance work was completed in August 2004 and now the flag remains on view and outstretched, flat, behind glass, in its specially designed conservation lab (Washington post). The other major exhibition on the first floor, America on the Move, traces the history of transportation in America. On the second floor, one of the most popular exhibits is First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image, which displays the first ladies gowns and tells a bit about each of these women. Personally, I liked the other exhibition right next door â€Å"From Parlor to Politics: Women and Reform in America, 1890-1925†, which talks about the changing roles of women as theyve moved from domestic to political and professional directions. In my opinion this section is one of the most popular and successful of the museums displays. The exhibition traces the changing role of the first lady politically and socially and holds up a mirror to the changing role of American women in general. Our next mission was to see â€Å"The American Presidency† exhibit which explores the power and meaning of the presidency by studying those who have held the position. There’re tons of artifacts including documents, personal effects, photographs and much more other stuff there. There is a small gift shop for this exhibit on this floor, so I end up purchasing a calendar containing the names of all the presidents up to date. I figured this would be helpful for my history final exam. Later, we passed by â€Å"The Price of Freedom: Americans at War† section and examined major American military explores and events. â€Å"Field to Factory† section was also kind of interesting, telling us the story of African-American migration from the South between 1915 and 1940. About 4 hours later we were exhausted, but very pleased. The museum holds many other major exhibits, but we didn’t have time to see it all. I discovered some of the everyday things of American history and had a great time. Overall this is a great museum which has more displays and more categories of interest than any other museum I have ever been to. There’s great historical information presented in many interesting areas. After spending nearly half a day in the museum I promised myself that I will definitely go back there again!
